Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 2026

Introduction

How Much Does It Cost? ("the Extension") is a Chrome extension designed to detect prices on web pages and convert them to your preferred currency with real-world comparisons. We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains what data the Extension accesses, how it is processed, and what we do — and don't — collect.

Data Collection

We do not collect any personal data. The Extension does not have servers, does not transmit your browsing history, and does not send any personally identifiable information anywhere.

The only network request the Extension makes is a daily call to a public exchange-rate API to fetch current currency conversion rates. This request contains no information about you, the pages you visit, or the prices you view.

Local Processing

All price detection, currency conversion, and comparison generation happen entirely within your browser. The Extension:

  • Scans the DOM of pages you visit for price patterns — this data never leaves your device
  • Converts detected prices locally using cached exchange rates
  • Generates real-world comparisons based on bundled reference data

Browser Storage

The Extension uses Chrome's local storage API solely to remember your preferences:

  • Your selected home currency
  • Language preference
  • Tooltip display settings
  • Cached exchange rate data (renewed daily)

All stored data is local to your browser. Clearing your browser data or uninstalling the Extension removes this information permanently.

Permissions

The Extension requests the following Chrome permissions:

  • storage — to save your preferences and cached exchange rates locally
  • alarms — to schedule the daily exchange rate refresh

The Extension does not request permission to read your browsing history, access tabs in the background unnecessarily, or communicate with external servers (beyond the single daily rate update).

Third-Party Services

The Extension uses a single third-party service: a public exchange-rate API. The call is made once per day from your browser, and the API provider receives only a generic request for rate data. No identifying information, referrer URLs, or browsing data is included.

We do not integrate analytics, tracking pixels, or any other third-party services that could collect data about you.

Children's Privacy

The Extension does not target or knowingly collect any information from children under the age of 13. Since no data is collected from any user regardless of age, no special accommodation is necessary beyond this statement.

Changes to This Policy

If this privacy policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the most recent revision. Since the Extension collects no data, policy changes would pertain only to operational clarifications or to comply with evolving regulatory requirements.
